Short-story writing competition

This week marks the first week of home schooling for the majority of families across the nation and finding creative things to do at home has never been more important. To help parents think of creative ways to educate and entertain their children during self-isolation, here at The Ironbridge Gorge Museums we have created Museum From Home. As part of this initiative, we have launched a short story writing competition – with the 2 winners receiving Book Tokens!

From the comfort of your makeshift desk, we are looking for budding and enthusiastic little-writers to create their own story, themed and inspired by the iconic Victorian period (1837-1901). Each story should not exceed 500 words and there’s bonus points for illustrations!

Also, for those children of key workers who are still going to school, they can use this as a classroom-based project and submit either individual or joint stories.

Each writer should use the Victorians, or even Blists Hill Victorian Town, as the inspiration for their story. Investigate amazing Victorians, imagine what life would have been like over 100 years ago, and invent marvellous adventures. Whether it be detectives or time travellers, robots or explorers we can’t wait to meet your characters and read your stories.

The winning stories will be recorded as a ‘book at bedtime’ and they, along with a selection of the best of the rest, will be added to an e-book which will be published on their website and social media.

This competition is one of the many activities to do at home that we will be holding during this pandemic, so parents can get back to working from home more efficiently whilst the kids are busy learning and having fun.

To enter the competition send your stories to marketing@ironbridge.org.uk – using the subject line ‘500 Words Story Competition’.

T&C’s apply:

  • Stories must be inspired by the Victorian period (1837-1901)
  • Must be a maximum of 500 words but can be less
  • By submitting your entry you are agreeing to your story being read as a bedtime stories by representatives for the Ironbridge Gorge Museum and used on the Ironbridge Gorge Museum social media and website
  • It can be a storyboard like a comic book, a picture book for younger children or a book with just words
  • It can be a collaboration – with family, (remotely) with friends or as a classroom-based project
  • Competition is open from Monday 30 March to Sunday 31 May.
  • There will be two winning entries for under 10s and two winning entries for over 10s – the prize is a Book Token.
