Unlocking the Severn Exhibition

Jackfield Tile Museum

Exhibition closed for the national lockdown and reopens on 3 December 2020

A conservation and river engagement project are unlocking the secrets of the River Severn as a wild watery highway for rare fish.  In a new exhibition visitors will gain an insight into the underwater world hidden beneath the river’s surface. They will be introduced to an endangered fish – the twaite shad - and learn the story of their epic River Severn migration.

If you have an interest in nature and wildlife, fish, or the River Severn more generally, this is an opportunity to stop and think about the wildlife under the water. Alongside beautiful graphic panels telling the shad’s story there are two commissioned short films to watch – including a new animation about the journey the shad make up the River Severn in search of their freshwater spawning grounds.

The exhibition is a quick and impactful way to immerse yourself beneath the surface of the watery world of the River Severn. The design is COVID secure with no need to touch any displays, but it retains an interactive feeling through the floor map which guides visitors around the displays and even teaches them how to do the “shad spawning dance!”

The exhibition also provides a prompt for us all to reflect on how the local river environment can play a role in our own lives, as a place to exercise and naturally boost our wellbeing.  Visitors will be encouraged to consider how they can help care for the river and its wildlife either through their individual action or perhaps being inspired to join collective volunteering efforts.

Unlocking the Severn is a conservation and river engagement project led by Canal & River Trust, and partners: the Severn Rivers Trust, the Environment Agency and Natural England. It is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the European Union LIFE Nature Programme.

The Unlocking the Severn Exhibition will be open in The Footprint Gallery, Jackfield Tile Museum, from Wednesday 28 October (open Wednesday–Sunday, 10am-4pm) until Sunday 28 February 2021.
