International Women's Day

Blists Hill Victorian Town

At Blists Hill Victorian Town we will be marking International Women’s Day by focusing on the lives of the women in the East Shropshire Coalfield in 1900, to highlight how much progress has been made to women’s lives in the last 119 years, and to see where progress can still be made.

The different shops and cottages in the Town will be focusing on the involvement and role of women in that occupation or part of society, and looking at how much women’s lives have changed since the start of the 20th century.

You will be able to:

  • see cooking demonstrations in the Toll House
  • watch a laundry demonstration in the Wash House
  • join a tour & talk 'Working Women in the Gorge' looking at the realities of women’s work in this area in the Victorian era. Tours will take place at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday
  • sign-up to the Suffragette Movement in the Duke of Sutherland’s cottage!
  • see a display of women’s late-Victorian costume, made by our own wardrobe team
  • follow a trail exploring Victorian women’s lives

International Women’s Day is held on the 8th March every year. According to the UN, International Women’s Day is ‘a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.’
