Heritage Open Day at Coalbrookdale

Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron
Enginuity

Join-in the national Heritage Open Days initiative at the Coalbrookdale Gallery on Saturday 8 September.

This is your chance to see treasures from our Library & Archives, including never-before displayed original Victorian artwork produced by the Coalbrookdale School of Art students.

For one day only, extra material will be added to our temporary exhibition, ‘Schooling Good Taste’, a free exhibition not normally open at weekends. Come and see these historic gems and meet members of the curatorial team. We are also keen to hear from people who may remember going to the school.

The Coalbrookdale School of Art opened in 1856, and continued to teach art classes in some form until the end of the 20th century. The industries of the Gorge, including the Coalbrookdale Co., Craven Dunnill & Co. and Maw & Co., often paid for employees to attend art classes and learn their craft. The school was linked with the South Kensington Museum (now known as the V&A), and the artwork was examined by leading designers of the day such as Walter Crane. Records show that students went on to work in the local industries of china making, tile making and iron production, as well as industries further afield or becoming artists in their own right.

The exhibition showcases a beautiful range of original design material and artwork created by the students, some were submitted for examination, others used to inspire products made by local industries, and some to demonstrate different styles and techniques.

Our free Heritage Open Day event runs from 10am-1pm and 2pm-4pm in the Coalbrookdale Gallery, adjacent to Enginuity and Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron.
