Blitz Hill - A 1940's Evening on the Home Front
Blists Hill Victorian Town
18 Jun 2016 – 18 Jun 2016
Enjoy an evening on the home front as Blists Hill Victorian Town is transformed to the 1940s.
Grab your ration book, pencil on your stocking seams and get ready to make do and mend at our early-summer evening event at Blists Hill Victorian Town. We’re travelling four decades into the ‘future’ with an evening of 1940s entertainment, music and activities.
Come dressed in your 1940s finery, walk down wartime streets filled with vintage vehicles, find out about Ration Book Recipes and relax to the sound of Forties music. Everyone will be given a ration of kali but there’s no need to fear, the rationing ends there at Blitz Hill – delicious fish & chips from the Fried Fish Dealers and beer in the New Inn Public House will be freely available to buy during the evening.
The blackout’s been lifted for one night only and you’ll be able to enjoy red-hot iron being poured in the Foundry along with period cars, steam engines and music from wartime. This is your chance to buy a Spam fritter, find out how people made the most of food rationing and meet some characters from wartime including the ARP Warden and the WRVS leader. You’ll even be able to join the Home Guard for their drill!
During the evening enjoy a variety show in the style of the hugely popular BBC Worker’s Playtime Shows which toured factories and workplaces boosting the spirit and camaraderie of the nation.
New for 2016 is the Taking Shelter experience – step inside our Air Raid Shelter complete with flickering lights and atmospheric wartime sounds. Here you will be immersed in a family experience led by the ARP Warden who’ll be making sure everyone is safe, handing out blankets and sweets for the children. Vintage singer Sarah Raymond will be in the Shelter entertaining everyone with classic numbers from the 1940s. Taking Shelter is included in the admission charge but, as space is limited, tickets are available on a first come first serve basis.
