Sound mapping

This is a simple survey that takes only five minutes and records the types of noises heard at a location. The survey is one of several included in this survey spreadsheet.

The aim is to record

  1. The direction that a noise comes from.
  2. The source of that noise.
  3. The quality of that noise, pleasant , annoying, noise pollution

Activity

Record the details of each sound you hear, during five minutes, on the chart below.

You can record the same noise several times.

The quality of the noise is given a value of 1 to 6. Birdsong being pleasant, would score 1, loud music perhaps 3 and a pneumatic road drill 5

NE

One dog bark in the distance

2

S

Child shouting

3

NW

Road works-noise from digger next to you

4

NE

Dog continues to bark loud and non-stop

3

Try the same Sound Mapping survey in different locations in an area – compare results

Presentation of results

A simple map can be drawn like the one partly completed below.

The DIRECTION is marked as a Directional line.

The SOURCE of a sound is numbered and a key included by your Sound Map.

The QUALITY of the sound, 1 to 6 is shown by the thickness of the directional line.

The NEARNESS of the sound can be shown by the length of the line.
