Pedestrian Flow Survey

A pedestrian flow survey is very much like a traffic survey, but instead of cars and lorries, it is the number of people passing you that is recorded. This survey can be done individually, or as a group spread out at various locations, in and around Ironbridge. If it is very busy it is a good idea just to record people passing you in ONE direction in case you loose count. (Mechanical click counters make it very easy if your school has them) Five minutes is the minimum time for a survey, but 30 minutes gives a far better result. It is useful to consider what would influence the numbers of people passing you over a set period of time. …the weather, the time of day, the day of the week, other factors such as special events on locally or where you are carrying out your survey.

Follow Up

  1. Draw up a line graph. Plot time against the number of pedestrians. Look for a pattern. Try to give reasons for any variations over the survey time.
  2. If possible compare your results, with those made at other locations, taken at the same time and for the same number of minutes.
  3. Enter data into Excel to produce graphs.
