Maw and Co block printed dust-pressed tile, a cherub climbing a sunflower plant between stylized floral borders. This tile is part of a continuous vertical run, 6"sq, c1880. There are likely to have been special designs for the top and bottom of the run and the tiles would have been used in the sidecheeks of a cast iron fireplace. In addition to the beautiful tiles, faience, art pottery, etc. manufactured by the firm of Maw & Co. of Jackfield which is on display at its Jackfield Tile Museum, the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Library also houses an extensive archive of documents, original drawings, trade catalogues, etc. which were rescued when the firm went out of existence in 1970. A full catalogue of the collection can be found on the Access to Archives (A2A) web page. Other material rescued from Maw & Co. can be found in Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury.
