The Opening of the Saltash Bridge

The Saltash Bridge was Isambard Kingdom Brunel’'s last work. This painting shows HMS Vivid steaming beneath it, with His Royal Highness Prince Albert on board. On the opening day, 2 May 1859, Brunel was so ill he was drawn slowly across the bridge on a specially prepared platform truck.
