The first task of the apprentice paintress was to learn how to paint the Indian Tree pattern. The outline of the pattern was printed onto the china and then filled in by the paintress. Mrs Owen (nee Green) recalled that when she started work as an apprentice paintress at the Works in 1901, it took her a month to learn to paint the pattern. She was then allowed to keep the first plate that she painted.
