This photograph shows five paintresses at work at the Coalport China Works. While apprentices began with the Indian Tree pattern, older, more experienced women would paint more complex patterns. Edith Wale recalled that the room in which the paintresses worked was divided into two, with young girls in one half and the older women in the other.
