The earliest steam engines were used to pump water from mines. Later engines were employed to wind men up and down the shafts and to wind coal, clay and ironstone up from the mine. This engine dates from around 1870 and worked at Milburgh Tileries in Broseley before being moved to the Museum in 1970.
