Coalport produced election jugs for local MPs, both as propaganda and to commemorate a victory. This jug was made for the 1796 Shrewsbury election. Sitting Tory MP John Hill was challenged by his cousin William, another Tory. William was declared the winner despite gaining 44 fewer votes. The Whig candidate who won the seat appears to have been ignored!
