Coalport began to produce a range of parian ware in the 1840s, exhibting some of it at the Crystal Palace in 1851. Parian is unglazed porcelain resembling the white marble of Paros in Greece from which it takes its name. Classical figures and busts were made, including this Beauty and Beast figurine based upon one of John Gay's Fables published in 1779.
