This French Sprigs circular dessert plate shows the moulded basketweave edge typical of French and Belgian porcelains, and imitated by Caughley. It is dated c1780-1790. Basketweave moulding was known in the 1700s as Tournay basket (after the Belgian porcelain manufactory Tournai) although the German factory Meissen appears to have introduced the design in the 1730s. Basketweave edges are also found on Caughley teawares.
