Caudle cup, cover and stand

Next » « Previous

This is a caudle cup, cover and stand dating from c1790. Caudle was a hot and spicy drink of ale or wine whisked with egg yolks. The word was also used to refer to a sauce of wine, butter and eggs used for pouring into pies, but the ornamental design of this caudle cup suggests that it was used for the consumption of the hot and spicy drink. The cover helped to keep the drink warm.
