The Great Exhibition

A breathtaking spectacle, the Great Exhibition opened on 1st May 1851 in the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park. The exhibition was a showcase of industrial prowess, with the Crystal Palace itself the prime exhibit. The sheer scale and exuberance of the interior showed great confidence in the ideals of peace, progress and prosperity. From its very beginnings the exhibition aroused considerable interest and comment amongst journalists, cartoonists, MPs and the Queen herself.
