Telford trained as a mason, gradually using his talents to become one of Britain’s greatest civil engineers. In 1787 he was appointed Surveyor of Public Works for the County of Salop, and when his new road between the county town and Holyhead was completed in the 1830s, it was described as “... a model of the most perfect road making that has ever been attempted in any country.”
