Prior Park, the seat of Ralph Allen Esq near Bath

Next » « Previous

This is the earliest depiction of a railway in Britain. The line was promoted by Ralph Allen, (whose large country house is shown in the background of this print), to connect the stone quarries at Combe Down to the River Avon at Bath. Unlike the railways and plateways in the country’s coalfields, it did not develop any further nor did it spawn any imitators locally, and remained an isolated initiative.
