In 1808, the owner of Middleton Colliery, J.C. Brandling, saw Trevithick’s ‘Catch me who Can’ locomotive at Euston, and discussed this with his manager, John Blenkinsop (1783-1831). In 1811, Blenkinsop patented his rack railway system, and Matthew Murray (1765-1826) built two locomotives to run on it, the first tried out in June 1812.
