Brunel is recorded as having ‘condescended’ to design the Hungerford Bridge which opened in 1845, and so when it had to be demolished to make way for the railway bridge across the River Thames into the new Charing Cross station, perhaps he would have been pleased that the chains were salvaged and used to complete his bridge at Clifton for which he had a greater affection.
