A photograph of Gooch in his late twenties standing proudly next to a model of his ‘Fire Fly’ class of 2-2-2 express locomotives that were the first to realise the full potential of Brunel’s broad gauge Great Western Railway. Gooch made his reputation as locomotive superintendent for the company, before resigning in 1864 only to be brought back the following year as the railway company’s new chairman.
