Bridgwater Canal - The Aqueduct

This structure caused great excitement when it was completed in 1761 because it carried one stretch of water - the Bridgwater Canal - over another - the River Irwell. Although Roman engineers had achieved the same result with greater structures on the continent, the Barton Aqueduct was just one example of what could be achieved in the new rational and technological society beginning to emerge in Britain in the 18th century.
