COSTUME PROJECT
Producing Bespoke Costume

The Costume Project at Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust has been producing bespoke costume for museums since 2004.  It was originally launched to assist museums in the West Midlands Hub, but since has worked with a variety of museums and organisations including: the Fashion Museum in Bath, Powys Castle, Ulster Museums, National Museum of Scotland, Clun Museum, and Bishops Castle.

See examples of our wonderful costumes here.

The Costume Project specialises in recreating eighteenth and nineteenth century costume, and making it accessible to the public.  Based on original patterns and historic sources, our bespoke services offer three levels of interpretation:

  • Reproduction - costume for display - a faithful copy of the original.
  • Reconstruction - costume to handle and wear - a copy, retaining the look and function of the original costume, but graded to modern sizes and using robust materials.
  • Re-invention - costume to handle and wear - using historic costume as the inspiration to create a modern interpretation that explores key functions of the original designs.

We will be having regular Open Days, please ask staff for further details
